Blasted Church re-opens
Last May, BCCN ran a story about the March 29 closing of Okanagan
Falls United Church. At that time, there were concerns that the historic
church would be closing forever.
We are happy to report that church board chair Joan
Holmes announced, in mid-October 16, “the wonderful news that
Okanagan Falls United Church re-opened for services in September 2008
– and we are embarked on a New Beginning, in a state of growth and
renewal under the leadership of our ministerial team of David Sparks and
Kathy McMillan.”
And here is a bit of research with respect to the
church, for readers who see spiritual legitimacy in the pursuit of
information about fine wines. The church, it may be recalled, is known
locally as ‘The Blasted Church’ because, when it was dismantled
and moved from Oliver to Okanagan Falls in 1929, dynamite was planted in
the rafters to drive them apart to make for easier transport to the new
site.
Well, as it turns out, there is a winery in Okanagan
Falls known as the Blasted Church Vineyards. And, occasionally, they have a
wine-tasting party in the late evening, known as the Midnight Service. No
word, at present, as to whether the vineyard is paying royalties to OK
Falls United for the use of their nickname.
Pumpkins and scavenging
New Beginnings Church, in Penticton, a congregation
planted in the year 2000, lists some interesting forms of outreach and
fellowship on their website (www.newbeginningschurch.ca).
On the afternoon of October 25, they held a Family Fall
Party which featured, among other things, pumpkin-carving. And, on November
8, there is promise of a Scavenger Hunt@Skaha.
At press time, regarding the latter, there was a
suggestion to check back for more information.
New Beginnings is affiliated with the Apostolic Church
of Pentecost. Its pastor couples are Kirby and Olivia Friesen, and Kailen
and Susan Olson.
Loonie Toonie flix
Summerland Baptist Church, known locally as The Church
on the Hill, has a Loonie Toonie Movie Night set for November 14 from 5:30
to 7:30 pm. Other info about the church, including its pastoral staff led
by Larry Schram, and its Road Salt Riders program for bikers, can be
accessed at www.summerlandbaptist.ca

Campbells still preaching
Wes and Stacey Campbell, long involved in the
leadership of Kelowna’s New Life Church, and founders of the
RevivalNow! ministry, are now listed on the website of Kelowna Christian
Centre as two of the people whom congregants and visitors may expect to
hear preaching at the church. Others in the list are senior pastor David
Kalamen, and associates Greg Bitgood, Ed Berk and Brodie Kalamen.
Iraq concerns
First Mennonite Church in Kelowna keeps a close watch
on world events in which Mennonite views on peace and conflict resolution
can be applied. A recent FMC bulletin notes that the Mennonite Central
Committee, the inter-Mennonite humanitarian agency, is responding to
families who have been displaced by on-going conflict in Iraq. Thousands of
blankets, relief, health, school, sewing, and newborn kits are needed for
this $2 million response, according to the note.
To participate by making a kit, or for more
information, visit www.mcc.org/iraqrelief. The First Mennonite website is www.kfmc.ca.
Jesus study
They call it ‘Jesus Study,’ and it takes
place every Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Coldstream Christian Church, led either
by the pastor, Dave Hockley or the family ministries staffer, Jim Kumlin.
The church, established in 1967, and known by the more contemporary moniker
of Real Life Ministries, has a website at www.reallife.faithweb.com.
