THERE is an interesting new sign on 160th Street in
Surrey. It is very eye-catching and consists of three pictures. The
picture above is the centre one. I know those hands.
The human touch it displays is true testimony to a
life-long commitment, of caring and compassion and unconditional love.
Lorne cared for Olive as long as he could in their
home and when it got to be too much for one person, he gently relocated
them to The Emerald, an assisted living component of Elim Village where
they have access to a little more help each day.
“Now that we are here, I can concentrate on us
instead of worrying about stuff,” Lorne said. He makes sure
Olive’s life proceeds with as few bumps in the road as possible.
In my work I see them often, and note the great care
he shows to see that she is happy.
I can see at a glance their depth of feeling for each
other when they smile, and look into each other’s eyes.
For me, these hands represent God’s grace,
fulfilling life-long, loving relationship even when life takes a turn
we didn’t plan on.
Lorne and Olive make me smile. They fill hearts around
them with hope.
In Genesis (2:22,23) we read: “The Lord God made
a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the
man. The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of
my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of
man.’”

Paul describes the union of marriage (Ephesians 5:
28-33): “He who loves his wife loves himself . . . just as Christ
does the church, for we are members of his body. For this reason a man will
leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will
become one flesh. This is a profound mystery but I am talking about Christ
and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he
loves himself.”
May God bless both those hands.
