WHILE most people know Union Gospel Mission (UGM) for its programs, services and
staff, behind the scenes exists a unique and supportive ‘backbone’ of volunteers who have quietly helped make UGM what it is today.
The Union Gospel Mission Women’s Auxiliary has been supporting the Mission for half a century, and June 22
marks the 50 year celebration of their faithful service.
Founded in 1959, the Woman’s Auxiliary was created to faithfully uphold the Mission, its staff and its
guests in prayer. Since its inception, the group’s secondary goal has been to encourage staff and provide them with the tools
necessary to care for Vancouver’s poor.
As one of the Mission’s earliest community partners, the Woman’s Auxiliary has raised money for practical needs to help the homeless. Last
year, through the collection of used stamps, the women raised more than $4,000
in support of UGM programs and services.
The women have also knit hundreds of toques for the homeless.
