ATHLETIC skills have frequently been utilized to raise funds for charitable
causes. But usually, the athletes involved have companions helping them.
Mark Towery is travelling alone, in an excursion around Vancouver Island. If he
is successful in raising funds, children in Malawi will benefit.
Towery has built a Florida-based ministry around his favourite form of
recreation. As a press release put it, “Mark is an avid kayaker – and has decided to put his love of the sport together with helping children
worldwide. Thus, Kayaking for Christ was founded.”
His circumnavigation of the Island began July 6, when he left Roche Harbor in
the San Juan Islands. The total length of his intended route will be
approximately 800 - 1,000 miles. The entire trip, travelling counterclockwise
around the Island, is expected to take four to six weeks – depending upon weather conditions.
The mandate of Towery’s organization “is to organize challenging kayaking trips in an effort to raise funds for
children in need . . . A charity [is] chosen for each trip planned . . . These
charities go to countries where Christians are not only persecuted, but
children never even get a chance to read the Bible and choose for themselves.”
For the Island trip, the ministry has chosen Cross International, Inc. as the
beneficiary. Cross International provides food, medicine and education to
vulnerable kids.
The particular project which will benefit from Towery’s effort is Kondanani Children’s Village in Malawi. The village ministers to a population where AIDS is rampant
among adults, and youngsters often die of starvation.

The village “rescues these infants and provides them with the tender loving care they need to
grow strong.”
