Catholic century
The Archdiocese of Vancouver will soon celebrate the
100th anniversary of its designation as a Catholic archdiocese. While the
official date is September 19, celebrations are being planned for later in
the year: a gala anniversary dinner October 31 at the Hyatt Hotel, and a
large celebration to be held at GM Place November 23. At the latter, Mass
will be offered, with a special guest speaker and celebrant.
Break-Thru for couples
Hidden Fir Lodge, on Sumas Mountain near Abbotsford,
recently opened. It offers intensive couples retreats which use art and
meditation to help heal marriages. For several years, Brian Murphy, who is
a former monk of 14 years, and a pastor trained in both art therapy and
psychotherapy, has had great success with the ‘Break-Thru’
process in helping people with addictions. He and his wife Catherine are
seeking to apply some of the same principles to marriages. Couples’
retreats will begin in September. For information: 604.746.1164 or

First Nations gather
First Nation Christians are encouraged to gather
September 13, 1 – 4 pm in Sardis, by Chilliwack pastor Brander
McDonald – a Cree, who is also known as ‘Standing Bear.’
The event, he said, is for “those that wish to
share their ‘journey’ thus far as followers of the Creator
Redeemer Jesus. It is a time of joining together to encourage each other by
way of a potluck, tell stories, jokes, sing songs – all in a way that
is culturally relevant to First Nations people.” Space is limited.

10,000 school kits
Staff and volunteers at Langley’s Ten Thousand
Villages fair trade store believe students in developing countries deserve
school kits. “Readily available school supplies let students and
teachers focus on what’s really important: learning,” says Olga
Nickel, manager of the store. “We hope that people learn more about
this project and decide to take part. In just a couple of hours, they can
make a real difference to classrooms of young learners.”
This year, thousands of school kits will be sent to
students in Iraq, whose families are unable to afford basic school supplies
due to years of sanctions and war. Additional kits will be sent to other
places where conflict and famine persist, such as Afghanistan, Ukraine,
Burundi, Liberia, Haiti and El Salvador.
