Up on the mountain

It appears Westshore Alliance Church has a future on Bear Mountain. On Westshore’s website, westshorealliance.ca, there is a photo of a handsome stand of trees, with a parkway in the foreground. The site was actually dedicated back in 2006 and marked the launch of a church campaign to possess the land. Senior pastor of the Westshore church is Jim Gunzel.

Sailing away

Online, at www3.telus.net/victoriacrcweb, is a great report on an end-of-year three-day sailing trip taken by Pacific Christian School (PCS) grade seven students, on the Pacific Swift. The web address belongs to Victoria Christian Reformed Church, which is adjacent to PCS and has had some substantial involvement in the school’s development. The sailing trip was part of a school learning and development adventure program. The Pacific Swift, pictured below, is one of the ships operated by the Victoria-based SALTS ministry. The organization uses sea voyages – sometimes quite lengthy – to teach young people practical skills and discipline. Earlier this year, one youthful crew spent several months in the Pacific, visiting various Asian countries.

Pastor’s garden

It used to be called Good News Church, and it had its beginning 70 years ago, in the Lake Cowichan area town of Youbou. Now, it is New Hope Community Church – and its pastor, Vikki Marrs, who is also an agriculturist, has an interesting form of outreach. She is willing to share produce from her community garden in exchange for labour, according to a report in the August 8 issue of the Lake Cowichan Citizen. Marrs, whose ministerial credentials are with the Congregational Christian Churches of Canada, became the pastor at the time of the name change. More on the church’s history, including photos, can be found at: www.members.shaw.ca/youbougoodnews

Seeking an associate

Christ Community Church (CCC) in Nanaimo is looking for a full-time associate pastor, to lead its multi-generational congregation in what they describe as “vibrant corporate worship.” Further, they state, the successful candidate will assist the lead pastor in “implementing our new vision, mission and core values around building faith at home.” The church’s website, www.cccnanaimo.ca, has a link for people wanting to see an introduction and description of the position. CCC, like its namesake in Victoria, is a contemporary expression of Christian Reformed church worship and affiliation.

Brechin bread

Brechin United Church, the classic A-frame just up the hill from the Departure Bay ferry terminal, has a couple of interesting monthly activities on its schedule. The first Wednesday of the month, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, is set aside for the Brechin Book Club. And, on the second Saturday of each month at 8:30 am, is the Batman Breakfast – where, curiously enough, breakfast and talk take place. There is more, as well, according to www.brechinunited.ca

Minor Prophet study

Historic Centennial United Church in Victoria will have a Bible Study series this fall, dealing with the biblical ‘Minor Prophet’ books.
