St. Andrew’s goes to the wall
Many visitors to Penticton comment on the unique little
stone church at 387 Martin Street. It is St. Andrew’s Presbyterian,
and has had a presence in the city since 1925 – as a
‘continuing’ Presbyterian church, after the
Presbyterian-Methodist-Congregational merger which resulted in the
formation of the United Church of Canada. Well, as it happens, apparently
one can acquire computer desktop wallpaper featuring the church (see
above), through a website at: desktopwallpapers.ca. We can’t vouch
for the visual quality, of course, but the concept looks interesting.
Evangel: Christmas by the book
Every year, Evangel Church’s library brings
Christmas books and videos out of storage for borrowing during the
Christmas season. As of now, they are available in the church library and
will be until early in January – which will give everyone a
chance to borrow many of the items. A few new items have been added this
year. For further library info, the church website is www.evangelbc.org.
Evangel: new deacons
There were new deacons elected recently at Evangel
Church, as well. They are Dennis Kort, Bob Kurtz, Donna Olson and John
Sparreboom. The church leadership’s congratulations are posted on the
website.
Emmanuel: be one of the 144
Emmanuel Fellowship Baptist Church in Vernon has
several December events planned, in anticipation of this month’s
focus on the birth of Christ. On December 4, an adult/seniors luncheon
takes place at 11:30 am, featuring the ‘Sing-a-long’ Band and a
video titled Christmas with the Swan.
A Christmas banquet, designed as an outreach
opportunity, occurs December 5; there are only 144 places, so check for
space availability. December 20 at 6 pm, there will be Christmas carolling
for the church family. And December 21 at 10:15 am is the time for the
church’s Sunshine Connection Christmas Pageant.
More info can be found at www.emmanuelvernon.ca.
Wride in Mission Creek pulpit
Daren Wride is the guest speaker at weekend services
during December, and at least two Sundays in January, at Mission Creek
Alliance Church in Kelowna.
Wride is a well-known motivational speaker and a
founding director of the Fresh Outlook Foundation; he is a graduate of the
Arrow Leadership Program.
The foundation has, as one of its objectives, “to
provoke a fresh outlook among British Columbians that inspires sustainable
behaviour at home, work and play.”
Mission Creek’s senior pastor role is currently
vacant, according to the church’s website,
www.missioncreekalliance.com.

Kamloops United: Blue Christmas
Know anyone anticipating a not-so-bright yuletide this
year? Have them check out the ‘Blue Christmas’ worship service
at Kamloops United Church, December 10, 7 pm.
Blue Christmas services have become a source of
connection and comfort in recent years.
At www.churches.kamloops.net, Kamloops United describes
the need: “For many people, the approaching Christmas season does not
bring with it joy and happiness that is advertised on television or in
greeting cards. Many may be facing the season after the death of a
loved one, or a broken relationship, or perhaps the inability to have
children, or having suffered an emotional trauma. Often, we feel pressured
and overwhelmed by holiday preparations.”
The Blue Christmas service “is a quieter
gathering than a traditional Christmas worship service. Scripture, music
and meditation focus on the movement from suffering and lament
– to comfort, from the Source of our hope.” – LM
