“THE TRUTH will set you free.”
These words of Jesus Christ are comforting and encouraging to many; but to
others, they are complete nonsense. Many people on today’s university campuses do not believe truth can be known, or that Jesus of
Nazareth had anything significant to say on the issue.
To that end, a new venture is being launched at the University of Victoria
(UVic) January 21 – to address the topics of both ‘truth’ and Jesus.
Libertas is Latin for ‘freedom.’ The Libertas Forum is an opportunity to present robust thinking about truth,
Jesus and other complex issues to the entire UVic community.
The Libertas Forum is modeled on a similar event at Harvard University, known as
the Veritas Forum – which proved an effective way of bringing the gospel into an academic setting.
Several Christian groups have joined together to support the UVic event,
including: InterVarsity Christian Fellowship; The Navigators; Arbutus Christian
Fellowship; Campus for Christ; Gateway Baptist Church; and Sunago, a Christian
club on campus.
Various individuals are also giving the event support.
One of the event’s organizers, Dan Rutherford from Gateway Church, comments:
“There is great value in the event itself, which will give a platform to
Christian truth in an environment which is challenging. However, the unity of
working together as Christians on campus is just as important to the cause of
the gospel in this community.”
The forum’s guest speaker this year is a biologist, Dr. Wade Warren. He will give two
presentations, followed by discussion and questions.
Warren’s topic will be: ‘Scientific skepticism about neo-Darwinism.’ It is subtitled “One biologist’s reasons for belief in design, not chance.”

Warren states: “I am a trained scientist who is a Darwin skeptic . . . A growing number of
scientists either doing or who are familiar with current findings in phylogeny,
biogeography, and anatomical and molecular homology are expressing skepticism
about the current model’s (Neo-Darwinism), explanatory capacity.”
The lectures will be held in the Student Union Building (SUB) and the general
public is invited.
Warren will give additional talks over the weekend (January 22 – 24) to highlight the current climate in the scientific arena and provide answers
to challenges raised.
These additional talks will be hosted at Gateway Baptist Church, 899 Royal Oak
Avenue in Victoria.
